I re-read this because I was looking for pre-holiday reading. I have specific requirements for pre-holiday books. They can be specifically related to Christmas - some years, I just re-read Dickens! Mysteries are also good for some reason. The third category is more like "light reading". I want something that feels worthy, but not too challenging. This book falls right into that category. I like Anne Tyler quite a bit, though admit that you have to be cautious about reading her books too close together, because there is a sameness to her writing, characters & situations. In Saint Maybe, the central conflict centers on Ian Bedloe's guilt and atonement for, in his eyes, having contributed to his older brother's death. It's an interesting situation. I think a challenge for Tyler here was that Ian, having turned to religion to resolve his inner demons, becomes almost "too good" and therefore somewhat boring! So Tyler kind of abandons him & concentrates on other characters. There are just flashes of Ian's feelings that reveal the turmoil beneath the surface strength conferred through his faith. I would have liked to see a little more of that. As it is, Ian is still a bit opaque right up to the end.

So this met my pre-holiday reading requirement, but it isn't my favorite Tyler book. Maybe there's a reason why I couldn't remember it very well...which is why I chose to re-read it!
